Chess: watching a top game
How to follow a top-level game, the openings people name, and today's top players.
Listen with headphones. When it asks a question, answer out loud before it tells you.
Key facts · Part 1 Essentials
- Evaluation bar: the engine's verdict in pawns from White's side; around plus or minus three is winning; a hash sign with a number is forced mate
- Algebraic notation: the letter is the piece, the square is where it lands; x is capture, plus is check, hash is mate, O-O is castling
- Time controls: classical is the long game with many draws; blitz is a few minutes; under five minutes is time trouble
- Openings: e4 is sharp, d4 is slower; Sicilian and Queen's Gambit; out of book means leaving memorized theory
- Carlsen and Nakamura: Carlsen is the long-time number one, Nakamura is the biggest streamer and a blitz king
- Gukesh and Sindarov: Gukesh won the 2024 title, Sindarov won the 2026 Candidates; check who holds the title now
Key facts · Part 2 Deeper
- Armageddon: sudden-death tiebreak; White gets more time, Black gets draw odds, and a draw counts as a Black win
- Freestyle chess, also called Chess nine-sixty: random back row, so no opening preparation
- Novelty: a brand-new move inside known theory, which often forces the opponent out of book
- Caruana is the classical specialist, Giri is known for draws and humor, Abdusattorov is the Uzbek rapid and blitz champion
- Why classical draws are common: engine preparation. What changes a game: a novelty, a blunder in time trouble, or an engine-approved sacrifice
- Sindarov earned the title match against Gukesh; check who holds the title today
Key facts · Part 3 Drill
- The bar counts pawns from White's side; three or more is usually winning; a hash sign with a number is forced mate
- In notation, the letter is the piece and the square is where it lands
- Check the clocks first; under five minutes is time trouble; out of book means memorized theory has ended, and a novelty is one way that happens
- Armageddon, Freestyle and the novelty; engine preparation is why classical games draw
- Carlsen, Nakamura, Caruana, Giri and Abdusattorov are the names; Gukesh and Sindarov are the title story, so check who holds the title today
